New House Tour: Living Room

Long time no see! I share a lot on Instagram, but I miss blogging and sharing more details here. I thought I'd start 2020 blog posts with a house update. I shared what our house looked like when we bought it back in August (we moved in September). We've done a TON of work since then. Still have more to do, but it's getting there. I love house projects, so I don't think it will ever really be "done." (I know Kevin will LOVE hearing that haha). I'm going to try to share one room every week or two on here. What it looked like before, what we've done, and what we still have left to do.

Let's start with the living room. Here's what it looked like when we bought it:

This is our front living room, and the room we spend the most time in. It has our TV and our "comfy" furniture. We also have a family room, but that's used less often. (I'll share that room soon.) This living room isn't big, and it's also where our front door is, so I wanted to make a little entry area, which was challenging with a small space. Finley also has her little chair and lots of toys and books in this room, so we had to make it work for all of us.

Here's what we did:
+ Hired flooring contractor to remove old floors and install vinyl plank flooring.
+ Painted all of the walls and trim (with help from family).
+ My dad replaced all of the outlets and light switches (they were all painted over).
+ New furniture (all sources listed at the end of this post).
+ New double curtain rod and curtains (and raised it).

goodbye ugly brown wall!

You can really see how not white the trim is in this picture.

The trim was painted the same color as the walls. Took several coats of white to cover that dark trim!

Goodbye carpet, hello new floors!
And here's what it currently looks like:

This room is so much brighter with the new paint on the walls and trim! I love it. It's small, but cozy, and perfect for us.

Since we don't have a coat closet by the front door, I added a runner rug and some coat hooks. I wanted guests to have a place to leave their shoes and hang coats or bags. We enter through the garage, so this is basically used when people come over.

Here's what I still want to do in this room:
+ Spray paint the vent covers so they match the trim color - I plan to do this in the spring so I can do it outside.
+ Add more to the gallery wall.
+ New pillow covers. These are the pillows that came with our couch. They are fine, but don't really fit my style. I like the idea of new pillow covers so I can take them off and wash them (because a toddler + a dog = messes).
+ New TV stand
+ I'd love to add some board & batten to the front entry wall and do some more coat hooks
+ paint front door
+ get another lamp

I love seeing before & afters, so just for fun, here's a couple of side-by-side comparisons:

+ wall color: Dolphin Fin Grey by Behr (same color I had in our old house)
+ couch and recliner: Art Van
+ end tables: Amazon - one holds Finley's toys in the bottom and one holds our magazines
+ living rug: Target I have the 7'x10' size
+ entry jute runner rug: Wayfair
+ coat hook: Marshalls
+ curtains: Amazon (sheer curtains + tan curtains)
+ double curtain rod: Bed, Bath, & Beyond
+ tv stand: old from Walmart

Spring & Easter Home Decor

Even though the weather man says it's supposed to snow later this week, I'm enjoying the Spring weather we've been having lately in Michigan. Warmer temps, sunshine, and longer days make me so happy! I get super motivated to start doing projects and re-decorating this time of year. Adding Spring and Easter decor to our home is one of my favorite ways to refresh our house after the long winter months. Here are some my favorite ways to do that (and one of the projects I want to do).

I think my favorite Spring decor is greenery. I love that it can transition easily in to summer, so I can keep it up even longer.

I don't have much Easter decor, but I love adding little things here and there. I got these cute little ceramic bunnies from my mom and they are perfect on our new kitchen shelves.

Wreaths are one of my favorite ways to add fun decor, and it's so easy to change them out for different holidays or seasons. I made this Spring wreath last year. It's not my favorite, but it'll do for now. I made the Easter Egg wreath four years ago and it's one of my favorite DIY projects to date. It's held up great over the past four years, and it's super easy to make. You can check out my tutorial HERE.

Fun kitchen towels are an easy way to add pops of color to a space. I love this cute Spring tea towel I picked up from the Target dollar spot last month. The Spring colors and the tulip pattern are just too cute!

Like I said, I get motivated to start doing home projects once the weather starts getting nice. I'd love to change up our kitchen faucet and the light fixture over the sink, so that I could enjoy this area of our kitchen a little more. It's just kind of plain right now. I've seen some super cute pendant lights on Arhaus that I think would be perfect in this space. (This one and this one are my favorites.) Looks like I know what I'll be adding to my birthday and Christmas wish list this year! If you're looking for some ideas to add to yours, take a second to check out Arhaus' Instagram.

What are you favorite ways to "refresh" your home for Spring? Any favorite decor pieces you use? Or things you want to do to your home this Spring?

Holiday Home Tour 2016

Just like yesterday's Christmas card post, I know this is late, but I wanted to share it anyway. I love being able to go back and look at my old posts to see how my decor and style has changed, so at least I'll have it to look back on. You may have seen some of these if you follow me on Instagram, because I participated in the 12 days of decor, which made me take pics on a daily basis. I'll let the photos do the rest of the talking.

This little shelf used to hold our DVDs and Blu Rays, but I got sick of looking at them, so I boxed them up and put them in containers in our TV stand. So now I get to decorate all the little shelves and I kind of love it. I also want to paint this thing white at some point...

I LOVE seeing holiday home tours, so I hope you enjoy this little glance in to our home all decorate for Christmas. This weekend I'll be taking it all down and replacing it with some simple winter decor, which I'm kind of excited about. As much as I love decorating for Christmas, by the time the holidays are over, I'm kind of ready for a little simplicity. Anyone else feel that way?
