I hope you had a great weekend! We spent ours finishing up our coffee table and end tables. I LOVE the way they turned out and I'm so excited to share them with you today!
We got our coffee table and end tables from Ikea about four years ago. They were cheap, and they did their job, but the lack/laminate finish was starting to chip and bubble. I didn't really want to spend a lot of money on new tables, and I had seen some great makeovers where people added wood planks to their tables. I really liked the way those looked, totally my style. When Melanie from Making It In The Mitten shared her coffee table makeover, I convinced my husband we should do the same to ours. And when he got a miter saw for Christmas, he agreed (I think it was just so he had an excuse to use his new saw, but whatever works).
Last weekend we re-did the coffee table and this weekend we did the end tables to match.
I didn't take any photos of the process of doing the coffee table because I was too excited and just wanted to get it done. But don't worry, I took some pics when I did the end tables and the process is exactly the same.
First, I took the table apart and lightly sanded it all with 120 grit sand paper. I also sanded all of the wood planks on both sides and the ends. I kind of rounded the ends so they weren't rough.
Then I cleaned all the wood off and painted one coat of primer and two coats of white paint. I just used paint and primer that I already had at home. I let them dry overnight and then added one coat of clear polyurethane to protect the paint from chipping.
I used Minwax stain that I already had at home to stain the boards. I let those dry over night too. And of course I decided to do all of this in winter with a foot of snow of the ground, so I did all of this in my basement.
After everything was dry, I put the table back together and had Kevin help me screw the boards to the top of the table.
At first we just used wood glue to attached the planks to the coffee table. We put large stacks of magazines on it over night to weigh it down while the glue dried. It held ok until Kevin and Admiral were messing around and hit the end of the table. The boards came unglued. So we decided to screw the planks to the table. We used black screws which blend in pretty well with the table and I'm very happy with the way they turned out.
And now for the fun part, all of the pictures!
I took the pics of the end table last night, so the lighting is horrible--sorry!
I am so happy with the way this turned out! I think it makes the Ikea tables look a lot nicer. I'm hoping this allows us to get a few more years out of them :)

Oh andI have to share this photo. I was taking "before" photos of the coffee table and Admiral decided to photo bomb me. I showed my husband this picture and we were both cracking up. Hope you get a kick out of it too :)

ReplyDeleteAwesome! I love it! I have an Ikea coffee table and 2 end tables that I need to redo as well. This looks great! Did you see my tv stand? I'm totally in project mode right now :) Nice work!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I'm in project mode too...it would be way easier to paint/stain outside if it wasn't so dang cold! haha
DeleteAgain, these look sick! Loving them! I might steal this idea and use it for a coffee bar on a higher table! :)
ReplyDeleteThose look great! That's such a good way to get a few more years out of those IKEA tables. And they are definitely more stylish now too! LOL at Admiral's photobomb!
ReplyDeleteIt looks amazing! I want to do the same thing to my dining table. Is that rug from Target? If so, I have the same one! Except mine looks awful now. I don't know if it's the quality of the rug or just us, but it's gray where it's supposed to be white. :(
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness!! You did AMAZING with the tables! I love them!!
ReplyDeleteAdmiral does not look happy that you're about to change the table haha! But seriously, you did an amazing job! I love the stain and the look.
ReplyDeleteIt turned out so good!
ReplyDeleteHahaha, Lucy loves to photobomb all my blog pictures too. Adam usually has to bribe her with treats to keep her out of the way! I LOVE the way your tables turned out! The end tables that match our coffee table have been on the to do lost since we finished the coffee table, but we still haven't gotten around to completing them. The are two tiered, so we are trying to come up with a strategy for how to attack that. This post gave me the motivation to get those done, maybe this weekend! Thanks for the shout out girl, and the screws aren't even noticeable!
ReplyDeleteAlso, be sure to link up with us for the motivational Monday link party!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, I have the exact same table (the kids use it as a play table)! When they're a bit older, I'm totally reclaiming it and doing this!
ReplyDeleteFound your post through the Blogger's Digest over at Pig & Dac.
Thanks for sharing, I'm pinning this to my Deliberate To Do List board!
Thanks for stopping by! This would be perfect to do when your kids are older--it won't matter if the top of the tables gets scratched/stained because you'll be covering it up anyway. Good luck :)
DeleteGreat job on the table! My cousin did something very similar last week, but with a gray color for the base. Looks awesome!
ReplyDeleteI love this! I think it's so cool to take an ordinary IKEA item, and make it your own. Awesome job!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great DIY project! LOVE it!! Your dog is a cutie lol. Gotta love when they jump in photos. Mine came and laid down in front of my painted end table I was trying to shoot and would not budge, so now he is officially on the blog ha. I would love for you to come over to Totally Terrific Tuesday and link up!! I would love to have you girl!

LOVEEEE this DIY project. My Ikea table needs an update and I am totally going to do this with it! Thank you!! Stopping by from the blogger's digest!
ReplyDeleteLOVE this! My husband and I are getting ready to do a similar project with our nightstands. I was intending to just glue on a top, but I'm SO glad you mentioned that yours came unglued and how you fixed it. That's exactly what I was worried about, so I'll be sure to grab some screws while I'm out, as well. Thanks so much for sharing! Definitely pinning and stumbling. :)
ReplyDeleteI Love them!! This is exactly what I want to do with My Coffee Table..Thanks for sharing ! I been working on projects in the basement too..its been 0 or below here in Iowa. Love Your rug as I have the same pattern and color also...We have great taste! found You on wake-up wednesday..Smiles. Cindy

ReplyDeleteAwesome makeover! Love the look of the rustic wooden plank top, too!
ReplyDeleteI love this hack. I love Ikea and this table looks much more expensive than what it really cost. Thanks for sharing at the Motivational Monday Link Party. Hope to see you later tonight.

ReplyDeleteHi, quick question: Did you use a sander or did you just use sand paper? I'm interested in doing the same project; however, I don't have a sander. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi there. I don't have sander either (but I need to get one!), so I just used sand paper. I just lightly sanded everything, and sanded the corners of the board a little more, so they weren't so sharp. Hope that helps. Good luck on your project!
DeleteLooks great! Attempting this on my lack ikea coffee table. I'm sure someone has asked this but what is the length measurement on your 7- 1/4's?
ReplyDeleteHi! Can you list the measurements you use for the boards on the end tables? Additionally, can you tell tell us what the color of the stain was that you used?
ReplyDeleteYou did an amazing job! My Ikea table needs an update and I am totally going to do this with it. Thanks for Sharing
ReplyDeleteWhat was the name of the stain you used?
