I Need Your Opinion: Bedroom Ideas

I need your opinion on some bedrooms ideas.  Here is what our bedroom looks like:

The first thing I want to do is tear out that built in headboard.  While I think it's a unique feature, it's just not practical/functional and it drives me nuts.  We wanted to get a King size bed, but couldn't, because it wouldn't fit between the headboard.  We now have night stands (not pictured), but they can't be next to the bed because of that headboard...so they are awkwardly placed and aren't convenient when you want to set something on them during the night.

I just want to tear out that part that sticks out from the wall, not the entire wood wall.  I think taking all that wood off the wall would be way more work than I want to do.  What do you think?  Any thoughts for or against it?

Here's my other question.  The photo below is an old photo from when we first moved in, the walls are now painted a different color, but I wanted you to see that wall.  All of the wood, trim, and doors are dark wood.  The floors are dark.  Our dressers and nightstands are dark.  Even the light switch cover is dark wood!  There is a lot of dark wood in this room.  The room is not big, so I feel like all of the dark wood makes it seem smaller and darker.  I would love to paint all the trim, doors, and that wood wall white, and leave the dark floors, dressers, and nightstands.  The trim in our kitchen, living room, bathroom, and hallway was already painted white when we moved in (you can see the hallway trim in the photo below).  What is your opinion on painting over this dark wood?

So what do you think, should I tear out that headboard that sticks out?  Should I paint the trim, doors, and wood wall white?

  1. I would be all for painting the dark wood I think - but wow it would be a hard job....
I like the bedroom wood wall - as a feature wall - maybe of you hung a picture or piece of art above the bed it would break up the darkness a bit? Love your bedding colours and I think it will look great minus the head board but with two bedside tables to balance things out! Can't wait to see what you decide to do!

    1. Thanks for the help! Maybe I'll do the trim and door white, and then see what it looks like before I attempt the wood wall.

  2. Definitely paint the wood wall and trim white! It will brighten up the room so much!

  3. I'm not a great interior designer, but I would say paint it with the white! Good luck :)

  4. Wow yeah, that is a lot of dark wood... or maybe it just looks that way compared to the brightness of the green haha. What is that headboard made out of? If you definitely want a king, I'd say you have no choice to tear it out, but if you're swaying back and forth on that AND it's something you could paint, I'd try experimenting with colors or something :)

  5. I say paint all the wood white. If you could I would tear out the bulit-in headboard, but that job seems like a HUGE undertaking!

  6. I would tear out the heaboard and paint the wood white. I think it'll make the room feel a lot bigger and brighter!

  7. Normally I would like the dark wood, but since the trim in other parts of the house has already been painted white, I think painting it white would make it go better with those. It would also be a nice contrast against the dark floor.

  8. I agree with you, I would tear out that part that sticks out so you can buy the king size bed you want. And I would probably want to paint the at least the trim white. I would leave the doors personally, I love dark doors and they're all over Pinterest now! Okay nevermind, just realized your floor is dark too. Yeah maybe paint the doors too! It'll definitely brighten everything up!

  9. I definitely agree about the headboard! Rip that baby out! The wood trim I'm not so sure about tho! I do love white trim but I also love dark wood trim and that looks like great wood so I'd be afraid to ruin it! :)
